Monterey Cypress trees from California, USA
Today we would like to introduce you Kolby M. Graham from California as he tells us about the Monterey Cypress trees he grows. They are located in the Silver Peak Wilderness of the Big Sur Coast, California.
Cypress trees grow up to 25 metres and they are endemic to California. It is a fire-dependent species, which means that the tree’s cones open up with heat (some cones may also open on a hot summer day). The largest in the US was remeasured in January 2015 and found to be 31.1 metres tall, with a 33.8 metres crown spread.
Kolby tells us, “I’ve been planting them around the land here – the most notable is the one I planted as a Memorial tree for Venerable Pemo together with her ashes, right outside the retreat cabin she spent 12 years in”.
He continues “The Tree Farm is in the Land of Calm Abiding. It all begins somewhere. Big trees come from small humble seeds. Almost all the trees in various stages in the photo (above) are called Monterey Cypress trees.
The first round of our unique Monterey Cypress trees are at various stages. And one tray of Coastal Redwood trees finally started to sprout. Perhaps one day we will be able to sprout our very rare Saint Lucia Firs. In the future, we will be sharing trees with our local communities, planting Memorial Trees for beloved ones who have passed on, and bringing trees to a local nursery that raises funds for Mental Healthcare centres in the area. All the while encouraging the process of planting trees with the motivation of healing the planet and our minds together.”
We will hear more from Kolby as he continues to develop his project of growing Monterey Cypress trees.
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us, Kolby.
