Planting trees for a balanced and healthy environment

The Human/Nature dichotomy is centuries old and it has deeply influenced the way our societies have evolved.

Is it accurate to speak of Humans and Nature as separate entities?

Quantum Loophole believes it is time to find a balance between industries and Nature. To achieve that, they are leading the transformation of one of the largest post-World War II industrial sites (2200 acres). At the time, this place was one of the largest aluminum smelting facilities in the world (it produced 10% of the world’s aluminum demand back then), resulting in a heavily polluted site.

We were told that a key feature of this project is the integration of a nature reserve of 600 acres, meant to be certified and registered as a carbon sink designed to capture over 100% of the carbon emitted on site. This forest will store carbon in the soil and plant species for a period longer than 100 years.

The nature reserve design utilizes evergreen tree species that hold their foliage year-round. This way, the planting will serve as an aesthetic element between industrial and human environments. This same visual aesthetic feature acts as effective sound attenuation, buffering industrial sound and therefore contributing to a healthier environment for all.

Native plants were chosen for this project, as they act as effective water storage batteries, which helps address surface water challenges related to extreme storms and weather events. These plants will also work towards cleansing the soil, clearing it from contaminants and pollutants, a legacy left from prior agriculture and industrial activities in the area.

This project is being done in collaboration with the University of Maryland Environmental Science and Technology Department, and the site can be found in central Maryland, USA.

The founders of Quantum Loophole dedicate this project to a better future. They share, “This symbolic event coincides with the International Day of Forests and represents making global industry part of Nature”. They continue, “We dedicate this project as a forward step towards transforming the world of the industry from being counter to nature into a synergistic part of nature”.

What do you think? Can we find a way of integrating human-designed industries into the intricate fabric of Nature?

Thank you, Quantum Loophole, for sharing your vision and project with us.
