Chenrezig Institute celebrates 50 Years of Spiritual Practice, Community, and Sustainability
Chenrezig Institute, a sanctuary for meditation, spiritual practice, and community, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Founded 50 years ago by Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa, the founders of Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition (FPMT), the institute has blossomed into a cherished Center for reflection, mindfulness, and connection.
One of the institute’s special spaces is the Big Love Café, created by early members following Lama Yeshe’s wishes. This café has since become a gathering place for community members to share meals and conversations, embodying the spirit of togetherness that Lama Yeshe envisioned. Osel gave a spontaneous talk at the Big Love Café, where attendees were invited to ask questions, turning it into a beautiful gathering.

The land surrounding Chenrezig Institute, once overgrazed and barren, has been transformed into a thriving forest by dedicated members and locals. Walking through the grounds, you can feel the harmonious coexistence of people, animals, and the majestic trees.
The institute’s recent *Big Love Festival* marked the 50th anniversary with celebrations. Osel Hita, founder of the Global Tree Initiative (GTI), along with Bengu and Katrina, from our GTI Team, joined the festival together. The community extended a warm welcome, creating an atmosphere of shared joy and unity.

The Festival was a zero-waste event with no plastic bottles allowed. Most people brought their own bottles refilling them at water stations. Vegetarian meals, many of which prepared on site. Osel specifically congratulated the community for the zero-waste event.
