Agrinotech in Haiti celebrates more than 350000 trees planted!

This week’s Success Story comes from Haiti.

Charles Brunel, the CEO and founder of Agrinotech, Agricultural New Technology, tells us about the incredible work they have done to support their environment and their community.

Lack of Trees = Poverty and Hunger

Charles tells us that the mountains’ natural systems in the Republic of Haiti have historically been affected by human activities, reaching in many places a total loss of vegetation cover. This environmental degradation is more evident in the area of Saint-Michel De l’Attalaye and its surroundings, which has resulted in the cutting of almost all its natural forests in the countryside.

Deforestation of the area is an environmental problem that needs urgent intervention and that significantly affects the quality of life of the inhabitants of Saint-Michel.

The largest impact of poverty and lack of food is due to a lack of fruit trees, which have been traditionally used as a source of livelihood. The deforestation is also a major threat to aquatic systems due to soil loss and sedimentation sequel, deteriorating tributaries of the “Rivers” in the area, whose waters originate in the Northern district of Marmelade, and then go to irrigate lands in the central plateau and the low Artibonite region.

Considering these threats to the natural environment, Agrinothec has been conducting joint actions in order to improve the economic conditions and quality of life of Saint-Michel’s community (which is the largest user of natural resources in the area), and therefore reducing pressure on the natural forests.

A community collaboration

Charles gives us a few examples of the projects Agrinotech has done in the past, to illustrate the tremendous environmental and humanitarian impact that Agrinotech has made. The projects below include the 350,000+ trees that they have planted over the years:

• The Saint-Michel community shows a replicable model of orchards and timber management, which contribute to family support and family economic improvement.

• The community has developed a basic organizational structure for the collection, preservation, and processing of harvested fruit trees that add value to their production for the market.

• The economic capacity of the 2500 families that benefit from efficient stoves and solar stoves increases due to decreased spending on the purchase of wood or charcoal.

• The Saint-Michel community retains timberline forests and vegetation cover in general, through a greater understanding of how these and the best management practices of their fruit, forest trees, and timber, along with the use of solar cookers and efficient wood stoves, contribute to the conservation of water resources, soil, and biodiversity.

Charles, we are truly impressed by the incredible work that you and your community are doing! Thank you for telling us about your life-changing projects and about your community’s dedication.

We invite our global community to have a look at Agrinotech’s Facebook page, and follow their inspiring work.
