November 2019 – and six years later!
This success story is a throwback to November 2019, exactly six years ago, when it all started for the Global Tree Initiative!
Tenzin Ösel Hita (our Global Tree Initiative founder) and Geshe Tenzin Namdak planted two fruit trees (pear and cherry) at Jamyang Buddhist Centre, London, as part of the Million Mirror Trees campaign of the UK newspaper The Daily Mirror.

It was reported that the Dalai Lama planted a tree in Dharamsala as part of the same campaign, organised by Michelle Klepper of The Daily Mirror.
Ösel and Geshe Namdak were featured in The Mirror newspaper, planting the trees on the same page as Richard Gere!
Looking back at this amazing action by our founder, Ösel, and Geshe Tenzin Namdak, we can rejoice in the success and progress we have made, since then!
Now, six years later, our global community has expanded to 69 countries around the globe, and together, we have planted and dedicated more than 4,150,000 trees! Yes, that is more than 4 million trees!
Have a look at our global tree-planting map, to see all these plantings and dedications.
A sincere and heartfelt THANK YOU to our founder, Ösel, for creating this wonderful project, and to our environmental hero, the Dalai Lama, who inspired our project.
