Replanting Trees at Sakubva Mutare, Zimbabwe

Back in December 2023, during the National Tree Planting Day in Zimbabwe, Manica Youth Assembly (MAYA) got together to plant trees.

“We planted 220 trees. Fast forward to June 21, 2024, we realized some of the trees had not survived and that we had to replace them so that they could catch up with the other trees around the planted area”, Jussa shares.

He continues,

“One of our key objectives in tree planting is to fight climate change and offset carbon emissions which lead to considerable increases in average temperatures. These temperatures are causing unprecedented extreme droughts like the current El Nino-induced drought which has wreaked havoc across Southern Africa and beyond.”

The trees that were replanted included both fruit and non-fruit trees. Once these trees grow, they can immensely benefit local communities: they will provide fresh fruit, offer shade, and help reduce average temperatures. They might even help increase rainfall.

Tree planting helps, among other things, to balance the water cycle, creating better conditions for water vapor to accumulate in the atmosphere and then fall as rain. Indeed, planting forests can increase rainfall!

Prolonged and severe droughts have serious adverse effects on the entire population, especially those who are already vulnerable, with women, girls, and marginalized groups being disproportionally affected. Furthermore, school dropouts increase and hunger worsens as a result of unproductive farming.

“It is our hope and wish that the 10 trees will survive and help keep soil erosion in check and local temperatures controlled. With the local community members on the ground, the trees will be taken care of and watered to maximize their chances of surviving.”

MAYA’s mission is to plant and care for as many trees as possible while involving local schools and communities. MAYA’s volunteers wish to inspire every school child to plant trees, so that they can, in turn, spread the word in their own communities, creating a movement of restoration.
